Building Blocks at Jeffrey Place: Public Infrastructure
Italian Village’s newest streets have received some finishing touches over the past few weeks. Barrels have dotted the Jeffrey Place site, as the Corna Kokosing finished aprons, paving, sidewalks and handicap accessible ramps on 4th Street, Neruda Avenue and 6th Avenue.Check out pictures on the Jeffrey Place blog.
At Jeffrey Place, our entire infrastructure is publicly dedicated. Building public streets isn’t the norm among private developers these days. And as one of the only urban developers in Columbus opting to do so, we often hear the question- “why bother?”
To us, it seemed like a no brainer. Read on to find out more about the value of public infrastructure. And learn another hard hitting question you'll want an answer to when shopping for your new home!
Have you been driving past Jeffrey Place and wondering about that steel and concrete building perched on the east side of the site? Perhaps you’ve been reading about the gorgeous architecture, and careful details involved in the designs by legendary architect, George Acock? Have you been chomping at the bit to get inside and see the building for yourself, but you haven’t been able to make it for a personal tour?
Well, my friend, here’s your chance. During City Hop on June 14th, 2008, the Lofts at Jeffrey Place will be open to the public. City Hop runs from 10:00-6:00, but if you stop by from 3:00-6:00, you can enjoy a cold beer, some tasty snacks, and the afternoon breeze on the 700 sq. ft. terrace of one of the units in the building. Take a peek at the skylights illuminating the building, and the floor to ceiling glass in all of the units, and even in the common halls that flood the building with natural light. Tired of having your view limited? Ride on up to the roof, and check out panoramic views of the city of Columbus from 60+ feet in the sky.
Whether you want to spend the day hopping around downtown condos, or just want to check out the Lofts at Jeffrey Place for yourself, Saturday is the perfect day for you!
If you aren’t going on the tour, click for the full article, and then print out the ticket from our website, and use it to get into the building on Saturday. At the beginning of each year, the Short North Business Association (SNBA) chooses a theme for every month of the year. The galleries, boutiques and shops in the Short North Arts and Entertainment district then follow that theme throughout the month, through events, promotions, andmost importantly- at Gallery Hop.
The themes this year have ranged from Going Green, to Celebrating Women, and this month Pride in Diversity. While in July we’ll be celebrating the 275th Gallery Hop, in August we’re spotlighting Columbus Arts. By teaming up with local artist groups, the SNBA will produce three events in August to showcase local artists, and spotlight one of Columbus, Ohio’s claims to fame!
Now while, it may feel a little early to be planning your August Calendar, if you’re interested in participating, you’ll want to make sure you throw your hat in the ring by June 27th, 2008. Click below for more information about this event, and find out how to participate! Whether you’re an artist yourself, or know an artist that might be interested, this is one event you won’t want to miss!
4 Little Letters. 1 Big Difference. How LEED Protects You
Florals and purples might be ruling the runway this spring but the real “it” color these days is green. As consumers attempt to reduce their personal impact on the ecosystem, the demand for environmentally friendly products is rising rapidly. And manufacturers from clothes, to cars and food to homes, are trying to get green. And while this trend towards “being green” is creating a whole host of eco-friendly merchandise; it’s also leading to a whole new marketing phenomena- greenwashing.
Greenwashing is the use of misleading information to create a positive “green” public image. Companies, products and organizations use double-speak, vague terms, and technical sounding jargon to make consumers think a product is environmentally sound. Sure business ethics classes are having a ball with this new phenomenon, but what do we as the consumer do to make sure our efforts towards being green, aren’t being thwarted by marketing!? In the building industry, builders, homeowners and consumers look to the LEED rating system to find the real deal in green homes. Read on to learn more about greenwashing and how the LEED system can ensure your green efforts go rewarded!
How to have a vegetable garden in Downtown Columbus
How big was your grocery bill this month!? We all know we need our fruits and veggies, but are they putting a huge dent in your pocketbook? Join the trend spreading across America when it comes to produce: do it yourself.
"More families are looking right under their feet to ease the problem of high food prices. As consumers balk at the rising cost of groceries, homeowners increasingly are cutting out sections of lawn and retiring flower beds to grow their own food."
What a fabulous idea! And while this trend is sweeping the nation, Columbus, Ohio is no different! Of course, having your own vegetable garden seems almost impossible if you also want to live in downtown Columbus.
When you live in most Columbus condos, you're already lucky to even have outdoor space- let alone a space large enough for a garden! And with high density, and close neighbors how would your home grown groceries even find enough light to thrive? According to the Wall Street Journal article, "Most vegetables do best when they get plenty of sun, so pick a spot that gets optimum sunlight, at least six to eight hours of direct sun daily."
Wait! Don't give up!
What you need is a rooftop terrace! Your roof gets direct sunlight all day. And the roof of your home is a perfect area for a garden. At Jeffrey Place most of our homes are designed with private rooftop terraces. The extensive ability to customize your home at Jeffrey Place doesn't stop at the rooftop door. We can help you turn that terrace into your own private rooftop garden!
Click below for a link to Urban Gardner for all of your gardening needs, and the full Wall Street Journal article, The Vegetable Patch Takes Root.
Feel free to stop by one of our daily open house hours, to see one of the roof top spaces for yourself. And imagine the possibilities!

Keeping to the original master plan developed by the community for Jeffrey Place, developer Community Building Partners is beginning plans for office space in the south eastern edge of the 41.5 acre site. Breaking barriers they have announced that the 150,000 square foot office space will be environmentally sound- seeking the Gold level of certification in the LEED-New Construction program.
Bringing and retaining jobs in downtown Columbus, providing much needed medical office space, and doing it all with ample parking, low opertating costs and a minimal impact on our eco-system - thats the Jeffrey Place Medical Campus in a nutshell. The use of 2.9 acres of the Jeffrey Place community is making news. And it's no surprise.
Community Building Partners, developer of Jeffrey Place, has applied for a $3 million grant from the State of Ohio for the green offices on the site. In a pool of strong contenders, the extensive amount of work already done on the site, prepared Jeffrey Place for the competition. Presentations will be made this summer, and decisions made this fall. You can read more about Ohio's Job Ready Site Grant in today's Columbus Dispatch article by clicking below for the full article.
